Choosing the Right DC Rectifier for Electroplating Systems

Estimated Read: 3 mins

Without stable DC current, achieving high-quality surface finishes in electroplating is impossible. This article helps you choose between air-cooled and water-cooled rectifiers, and sizing current ratings for your tank volume.

Amperage Sizing Formula

A general rule of thumb for commercial electroplating is to calculate the surface area of your workpiece in square decimeters or square feet. Different plating solutions require specific current densities. For example, nickel plating typically requires 2 to 4 Amps per square decimeter, while chromium plating can require up to 15 to 30 Amps per square decimeter.

Pulse Plating vs. Constant Current

Pulse plating rectifiers rapidly cycle the current on and off or between different voltage levels. This reduces hydrogen embrittlement, improves coating density, and delivers exceptionally uniform deposits on complex geometries compared to traditional constant current rectifiers.
